Meghalaya: East Khasi Hills Tops E-Waste Generation in State, Reports MSPCB
Northeast Desk, 22nd May: At the E-Waste Management Summit 2024 on May 21, a report by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) disclosed that the East Khasi Hills district leads the state in e-waste generation, followed closely by West Garo Hills district.
GH Chyrmang, the member-secretary of MSPCB, highlighted the extensive efforts involved in compiling the e-waste inventory, underscoring its importance in tackling environmental concerns and e-waste pollution. He pointed out that a significant portion of the e-waste comes from commercial entities, educational institutions, and workplaces, reflecting a general lack of awareness about e-waste management.
Chyrmang emphasized the need for people to categorize waste properly into solid waste, e-waste, and plastic waste. To address this issue, MSPCB has partnered with Hulladek Recycling Private Limited to introduce dedicated E-Waste Bins across the state.
The first bin has been installed at the MSPCB office, with plans to deploy 50 more in the coming months. This initiative aims to offer a safe and convenient disposal method for electronic waste, including old household appliances, computer parts, chargers, and batteries, thereby promoting proper e-waste management in Meghalaya.
