Meghalaya Education Minister Advocates Humanitarian Support for Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Communities from Bangladesh

Northeast Desk, 7th August: Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma has emphasized the need for the state government to offer refuge to the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities from Bangladesh if circumstances necessitate such actions.

Addressing reporters, Sangma underscored the importance of approaching the situation from a humanitarian perspective rather than a religious one. “The focus should be on humanitarian grounds. Helping the indigenous population of the state must be humanitarian,” he stated.

Sangma highlighted the uncertainty of the future and expressed concern that members of the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities might seek refuge in India, particularly in neighboring states, should any adverse events occur. “Nobody knows what will happen in the days to come,” he remarked.

He further indicated that the state must explore all possible responses to such a situation, noting that the ultimate decision regarding humanitarian aid would rest with the Government of India. “The state must explore the possibilities of responding to the situation. The prospects of humanitarian help to them would be decided by the Government of India,” Sangma said.

The minister stressed that assistance should not be based on religious grounds. “There are many Khasis and Jaintias who are either Christians or non-Christians. There are many Garos who are not Hindus but Christians,” he explained.

Sangma warned that decisions influenced by religious considerations could impact the willingness to provide help, reassuring that the Meghalaya government is committed to assisting people connected to the state’s communities.

He also noted that the current situation could affect these communities, regardless of whether they reside inside or outside Bangladesh. “The communities will get affected in the wake of the prevailing situation, whether the people are living inside or outside Bangladesh,” Sangma concluded.
