Meghalaya Education Minister Chairs Meeting to Address Garo Hills Educational Challenges

Northeast Desk, 14th June: Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma convened a consultative meeting on June 13 with educators and officials from Garo Hills to address the region’s educational challenges and collect recommendations for improvement.

Minister Sangma emphasized Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s ambition for Meghalaya to become a leading state in education. He urged officials to conduct regular inspections of schools to ensure they function effectively.

Educationist Sume B. Sangma, who runs a school for domestic workers, highlighted several issues, including the prevalence of single-teacher schools managing multiple classes, language barriers, and delayed textbook supplies affecting her underprivileged students.

Rev Fr Thomas John, Principal of St. Mary’s, pointed out the changing mentality of students due to mobile and social media addiction, which leads to a lack of focus. He suggested a review of the exam patterns and the “Best of five subjects” policy.

Himalaya Shangpliang, Advisor to the Meghalaya State Education Commission (MeSEC), stated that the commission visited Garo Hills to understand the ground realities and gather suggestions.

The meeting was attended by MeSEC Chairperson Prof SM Sungoh, former UPSC chief David R. Syiemlieh, Education Secretary Ambrose Ch. Marak, school board chief CP Marak, and West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani.

The goal of the meeting was to compile comprehensive recommendations to address and resolve the educational challenges faced by Garo Hills, aiming for significant improvements in the region’s education system.
