Meghalaya Education Minister Urges MLAs to Personally Drive School Infrastructure Reforms
Meghalaya’s Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has called on all elected representatives to take direct responsibility for improving school infrastructure, emphasizing that meaningful change cannot be achieved through government efforts alone.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, Sangma appealed to the state’s 60 MLAs and two MPs to proactively use their Local Area Development Scheme (MLALADS) funds to uplift school conditions in their respective constituencies. “If each MLA takes care of 50 schools per year, we can make a real change,” he said.
Setting an example, Sangma shared that he had personally overseen the renovation of 45 schools in his Rongara-Siju constituency using ₹2 lakh per school from his MLA fund. “Let’s not play the blame game. Let us preach what we practice,” he added, urging all political leaders to collaborate beyond party lines.
Each MLA in Meghalaya receives ₹2.5 crore annually under MLALADS for local development, which can be used for a range of infrastructure projects including school upgrades. However, many government schools across the state still suffer from poor infrastructure, lacking basic facilities like proper classrooms, toilets, and furniture.
Sangma’s appeal is seen as a call to action to address these persistent gaps through collective leadership and grassroots-level accountability.
