Meghalaya Empowers Fish Farmers with Digital Platform for Sustainable Growth

Ampati: In a major step towards modernizing the fisheries sector, the Office of the Superintendent of Fisheries, Ampati, launched the National Fisheries Digital Platform Empowerment Program, equipping fish farmers with digital tools to enhance productivity, sustainability, and market access.

The initiative, held on February 18, aims to integrate technology into traditional fishing practices, allowing farmers to access real-time information on government schemes, market trends, and weather forecasts. Inaugurating the event, Risa V.C. Sangma, Superintendent of Fisheries, Ampati, highlighted the significance of digital empowerment in ensuring economic growth while maintaining aquatic biodiversity. She emphasized that the program aligns with the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the Meghalaya State Aquaculture Mission (MSAM), both of which focus on strengthening the state’s fisheries industry.

A key message during the event was the importance of financial discipline, particularly timely loan repayments, which directly influence the availability of government support. Sangma urged fish farmers to actively utilize the platform, stressing that digital literacy is now a critical component of fisheries management. She also reiterated the Meghalaya government’s commitment to policy-driven interventions aimed at improving the sector.

Participants were given hands-on training on how to navigate the platform, including checking market prices, tracking weather updates, applying for financial aid, and maintaining digital records for better financial planning. A major highlight was the on-spot registration of fish farmers onto the platform, facilitated by the Common Service Centre (CSC), Ampati, ensuring instant access to crucial digital services. CSC representatives assisted beneficiaries in setting up digital profiles, streamlining their interactions with government initiatives.

In addition to digital training, the program also saw the distribution of essential aquaculture inputs, including fish seeds, fish feed, and equipment under the PMMSY and MSAM schemes. These resources aim to boost production capacity, improve fish quality, and create new income opportunities for local fish farmers.

Several beneficiaries expressed optimism about the initiative, noting how previous government interventions had already transformed their livelihoods. With the introduction of the digital platform, many believe they can now expand their businesses, reduce dependence on intermediaries, and access broader markets with ease. The technical team further demonstrated key platform features, such as real-time market updates, weather alerts, knowledge-sharing forums, and scheme eligibility insights, reinforcing the long-term benefits of digital integration in fisheries management.
