Meghalaya Exploring Alternative Route Around Umiam Dam for Commuters
Northeast Desk, 13th September: Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal has announced that efforts are underway to identify an alternative route bypassing the Umiam dam to ease travel for vehicles heading to Shillong. This move comes in response to safety concerns surrounding the dam, despite the completion of retrofitting construction work.
Speaking to reporters, Mondal said the department has sought assistance from Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar to address the situation. He assured the public that steps are being taken to find a solution for the convenience of commuters.
Additionally, the minister ruled out allowing large and heavy vehicles to cross the Umiam bridge, citing safety concerns and emphasizing that restrictions have been put in place to protect the dam’s structural integrity.
