Meghalaya: Family Demands Magisterial Inquiry into Civil Engineering Student’s Suspicious Death

Northeast Desk, 24th July: The family of Diana Dimre Ch Marak, a civil engineering student at Shillong Polytechnic, has requested a magisterial inquiry into her death, which occurred under suspicious circumstances. Marak, a 24-year-old from Dakopgre, Tura, was found hanging in the girls’ hostel on May 6.

Two months after the incident, family members, clan representatives, and pressure groups approached East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah to express their concerns about possible foul play. They formally requested a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The delegation reported burn marks and other injuries on Marak’s body and mentioned harassment from fellow students. They also noted that Marak had shown signs of mental distress before her death. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the lack of a crucial histopathology report and the delay in releasing the post-mortem findings, fueling demands for a more thorough and transparent inquiry into her death.
