Meghalaya: Five Bangladeshi smugglers arrested by BSF in South Garo Hills

Shillong: In a significant operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended five Bangladeshi nationals attempting to smuggle currency across the Indo-Bangladesh border in South Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

The suspects were found in possession of 810 Bangladeshi Taka during the operation, which took place in a known smuggling hotspot.

The BSF’s vigilance extended to other border regions, including East Jaintia Hills and West Garo Hills districts, where multiple smuggling attempts were thwarted earlier this week.

Officers seized various contraband items, including IV cannula sets, 2,000 illegal cough syrup bottles, and a Tata truck. The total value of the confiscated items is estimated at ₹52.76 lakhs.

These operations underscore the persistent challenges faced by security forces in preventing illegal cross-border activities along the Indo-Bangladesh frontier.

In response, BSF Meghalaya has ramped up patrols and surveillance efforts in known smuggling-prone areas, particularly in sectors with difficult terrain like South Garo Hills.

Border security experts suggest that currency smuggling may be linked to broader trafficking networks operating in the region.

The remote and rugged geography of South Garo Hills has made it a focal point for illicit activities, necessitating sustained vigilance and strategic interventions.

The BSF’s proactive measures aim to disrupt these networks and strengthen border security, ensuring the safety and stability of the region.
