Meghalaya Flood Death Toll Rises to 17 as Two Children Tragically Lose Lives in Garo Hills

Northeast Desk, 8th October: The death toll from the devastating floods in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills has climbed to 17 after two children tragically lost their lives due to the flash floods in the region. The victims, Silarin Marak (8) and Tangme R Marak (3), both residents of Bate Apal-Bangsi Apal village in North Garo Hills, fell into a water-filled pit while playing near their home. The pit, obscured by accumulated floodwaters, claimed the lives of the children.

In response to the worsening situation, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is set to visit the flood-affected areas, including Dalu, Atisia Songmong, and other regions on October 8. The chief minister will meet with the families of the deceased in both West and South Garo Hills, offering condolences and assessing the flood damage.

Sangma will also inspect relief camps and hold a review meeting with local administrations to evaluate the extent of the destruction to life and property caused by the floods. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) continues to provide support, overseeing relief material distribution and rescue efforts in the affected areas.

Since October 4, the Garo Hills district has been lashed by incessant rainfall, triggering widespread floods and landslides that have impacted thousands of residents, exacerbating the region’s humanitarian crisis.
