Meghalaya Folk Musician Silbi Passah Receives Padma Shri
Northeast Desk, 26th January: Silbi Passah, a renowned folk musician from Meghalaya, has been honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in the field of art, marking a significant recognition for her distinguished service.
Hailing from Riatsamthiah in Shillong, Passah’s contribution to traditional folk Khasi music in Meghalaya has earned her acclaim. A notable Khasi-Jaintia artist, composer, poet, and playwright, she has become a prominent figure in the cultural landscape of the state. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Passah also serves as a school teacher.
This accolade follows Passah’s receipt of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2021, presented by President Droupadi Murmu. Her multifaceted contributions to the arts and her commitment to preserving and promoting Khasi folk music have garnered admiration and respect.
The Padma Awards, among the highest civilian honors in India, recognize individuals across various fields such as art, social work, public affairs, science, literature, sports, and more. The awards are presented by the President of India in a ceremonial function at Rashtrapati Bhawan, typically held between March and April each year.
