Meghalaya: Former IPS Officer and BJP Spokesperson Files Complaint Over Fake Facebook Profile Impersonation

Northeast Desk, 7th May: Mariahom Kharkrang, a former IPS officer and current BJP spokesperson, has taken legal action against unknown individuals for allegedly creating a fake Facebook profile impersonating him with the intention of committing financial fraud.

According to the complaint lodged at the Lumdiengjri police station on May 6, the fraudsters utilized Kharkrang’s name and photograph to fabricate the fake profile on the social media platform. Subsequently, they initiated contact with individuals and offered goods for sale, potentially aiming to deceive unsuspecting victims.

Kharkrang expressed his concerns in the complaint, stating, “This is to inform that unknown person/persons have created a fake Facebook account using my name and profile picture. Later the said person/persons started contacting people offering goods for sale. The motive of the act is to carry out criminal acts and for cheating.”

Having retired from the Indian Police Service and subsequently joining politics with the BJP, Kharkrang has urged the police to take necessary legal action against the perpetrators. The complaint underscores the increasing prevalence of cybercrimes and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding against fraudulent activities on social media platforms.
