Meghalaya: Four Killed in Ri-Bhoi Road Accident; One Injured

Shillong: In a tragic road accident in Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya, four men lost their lives when a truck they were travelling in veered off a hilly road and plunged into a ravine late last night, December 16. Another individual sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment in Shillong.

The accident took place in the Mynnar Jirang area, where the truck, heavily loaded with firewood, fell approximately 200 metres into a ravine. The victims were identified as Edward Nongkhlaw, Teilor Nongphlang, and Francis Warjri, all residents of Iewsohksang village, and Bankerlang Khyllait from Jirang. The lone survivor, Benedic Syiem, is recovering under medical care.

The incident occurred while the group was returning after transporting firewood, intending to offload the cargo at a nearby destination. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Authorities have transported the bodies of the deceased to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Local MLA Sosthenes Sohtun visited the families of the victims today, offering condolences and assurances of support during this difficult time.

The incident has left the community in grief, raising concerns about road safety in the hilly terrains of the region.
