Meghalaya: Garo Hills Clans Unite Through Sport as Bolwari Mahari and Chambugong Mahari Triumph in Football Tournaments
Northeast Desk, 22nd September: The Garo Hills were abuzz with excitement as the 4th Men’s Inter Mahari Football Tournament and the 2nd Inter Mahari Women’s Football Tournament concluded, showcasing fierce competition among the region’s clans. Bolwari Mahari clinched victory in the men’s division with a 3-1 win over Agitok Mahari, while Chambugong Mahari dominated the women’s division, securing the title with a 4-1 victory over Mangsang Mahari.
These tournaments, which drew participation from 57 teams, were more than just athletic contests. They served as a platform for strengthening community ties. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who attended the event, emphasized the tournaments’ role in fostering unity among the Garo people, saying, “The tournament is not only about competition but also serves as a bonding exercise for the different clans.”
In support of this initiative, the state government allocated Rs 14 lakhs through the Chief Minister’s Special Grant, reflecting its commitment to promoting community engagement through sports. Sangma expressed hope that such events would continue to strengthen the bonds within the Garo community.
