Meghalaya Gears Up for Another Vibrant Strawberry Festival
Shillong: Meghalaya is set to host its annual Strawberry Festival on May 2nd and 3rd, continuing its tradition of celebrating the state’s thriving agro-tourism sector, rich cultural heritage, and commitment to rural development. This year’s edition, an initiative of the Department of Tourism, is being organized by Meghalayan Age Limited (MAL) with crucial support from the Departments of Tourism and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, underscoring the state’s significant strides in fostering rural entrepreneurship.
The festivities will unfold across three picturesque locations, inviting visitors to experience the unique charm of Sohliya in Ri Bhoi District, Syntung in East Khasi District, and Darechikgre in West Garo Hills District. These venues will become hubs of activity, offering a diverse range of experiences that go beyond the simple joy of strawberries.
Attendees can look forward to engaging in hands-on strawberry picking sessions, witnessing insightful cooking demonstrations, and participating in workshops focused on local beverage preparation. The vibrant atmosphere will be further enhanced by live musical performances and cultural presentations, providing a glimpse into the heart and soul of Meghalaya. A variety of food stalls and dedicated children’s activities will ensure a delightful experience for all age groups.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently visited Syntung village, engaging directly with the local farmers who are pivotal to Meghalaya’s burgeoning strawberry industry. This interaction highlights the government’s commitment to expanding strawberry cultivation, with ambitious plans to cover between 100 and 500 acres. This expansion is aimed at significantly boosting the income of local farmers and driving overall economic growth in the region.
A key attraction will be the live musical performances by talented local artists, showcased through the MGMP platform, alongside captivating cultural performances that will illuminate the state’s vibrant traditions. For those seeking adventure, the festival will offer opportunities for cycling and trekking through the scenic farms, as well as unique glamping setups that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Meghalaya. Adding an educational element, the festival will also feature learning sessions on traditional winemaking, local beverages, and organic farming techniques.
The inaugural edition of the Strawberry Festival, held on April 12th and 13th, 2024, garnered national attention and set a strong precedent for future celebrations. That event featured fresh strawberry picking, informative jam-making workshops, and a variety of stalls offering delectable strawberry-based products, including wines, jams, and ice creams. Live music through the MGMP platform, cultural shows, and adventure activities like cycling, treks, and glamping all contributed to the lively and festive ambiance.
Meghalaya’s strawberry production has seen a steady increase, reaching approximately 1,220 metric tonnes in 2024, up from 1,196 metric tonnes in 2023. This growth is a testament to the effectiveness of government initiatives, such as the distribution of saplings to farmers, aimed at bolstering agricultural output.
More than just a tourist attraction, the Strawberry Festival has evolved into a significant platform for community empowerment. It provides valuable opportunities for local farmers, Self Help Groups (SHGs), and small entrepreneurs to showcase their products and skills, thereby promoting sustainable livelihoods and fostering the growth of agro-tourism in Meghalaya.
