Meghalaya Government and Harijan Panchayat Committee to Reconvene on Long-Delayed Relocation Talks

Northeast Desk, 10th August: The Meghalaya government and the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) are set to resume critical discussions today regarding the relocation of 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong, a contentious issue that has lingered unresolved for years.

This meeting follows a directive from the state government, which had given the Harijan committee a two-month window to appoint a new president for the negotiations. The discussions, which have been stalled for some time, are aimed at finding a mutually agreeable solution to the long-standing relocation matter.

In a notable development, the Meghalaya High Court, on June 13, granted a six-week extension to both the state government and the HPC to make progress on the issue. Justice W Diengdoh, in his order, highlighted that legal representatives from both sides had indicated that settlement discussions were moving forward. The court allowed the additional time in the hope that a positive agreement could be reached, potentially resolving the matter without further judicial involvement.

As the deadline approaches, today’s meeting is seen as a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to address the concerns of the affected families and bring an end to this protracted dispute.
