Meghalaya: Government Forms High-Level Committee to Safeguard Garo Culture After Cenotaph Demolition

Shillong: In a swift response to the recent demolition of a historically significant cenotaph, the government has constituted a 28-member committee tasked with the crucial responsibility of preserving and promoting Garo culture and heritage.

The formation of this influential body was officially announced through a notification issued yesterday, April 3rd. Leading the newly formed committee will be cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak, signaling the government’s commitment to this vital endeavor.

The committee’s composition includes prominent figures such as Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira, Secretary in-charge of Arts and Culture RP Marak, and the Chief of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Albinius R Marak, highlighting a collaborative approach involving both government and autonomous council representatives.

The newly established panel has been entrusted with a comprehensive mandate that includes the critical task of identifying and meticulously assessing sites of historical importance to the Garo community. Furthermore, the committee will be responsible for formulating concrete recommendations aimed at ensuring the robust protection and diligent preservation of these invaluable sites.

Beyond specific locations, the committee is also tasked with developing a wider framework designed to safeguard the rich tapestry of Garo traditions, language, and deeply rooted cultural values, with a clear directive to actively seek and incorporate the perspectives of all relevant stakeholders in this important process.
