Meghalaya Government in Talks to Revive Baljek Airport for Regional Connectivity

Shillong: The Meghalaya government is working towards making Baljek Airport operational, with discussions underway with the Airports Authority of India to facilitate flights for 19-20 seater aircraft. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar disclosed this during the Budget Session of the Legislative Assembly on Friday.

The airport, located in the Garo Hills region, has remained non-operational despite the acquisition of 211.13 acres of land over several decades. The government initially obtained 153.13 acres between 1986 and 1989, followed by an additional 58 acres in 2014, with a total expenditure of Rs 3.57 crore for land acquisition.

The update was provided in response to questions from Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma and MLA Rupa Marak regarding the status of both Baljek and Jengjal airports. With improved air connectivity seen as crucial for regional development, the state government aims to expedite efforts to operationalize the facility.
