Northeast Desk, 11th May: The Meghalaya government has launched an investigation into allegations against the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), Lajja Ram Bishnoi, regarding the purported use of a fake number plate on his vehicle. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong made this announcement on May 10, stating that the government received an FIR the previous day accusing the top cop of misusing and tampering with the registration number plate of his vehicle.
Tynsong emphasized that a case has been registered, and the investigation has commenced. He urged patience, highlighting the importance of allowing the investigative process to unfold before drawing conclusions. Tynsong underscored that the law would take its course once the investigation is complete.
Regarding potential action against the DGP, Tynsong refrained from speculation, stating that their primary responsibility is to address the FIR. He stressed that while the government is aware of the case, it is essential to await the outcome of the investigation. Tynsong mentioned that an affidavit detailing the probe’s findings would be submitted to the court for further action.
Regarding the possibility of action against members of a police inquiry committee formed earlier to investigate a vehicle scam, Tynsong deferred comment, citing the linkage of the FIR to an older case pending a court decision. He indicated that it would be for the court to decide on the matter.
The FIR, filed by former Assistant Inspector General GK Iangrai on May 9, alleges that Bishnoi misused and tampered with his vehicle’s number plate. According to Iangrai, Bishnoi arrived in Shillong on May 17, 2022, to assume the DGP position and allegedly swapped the number plate of his white Kia Carnival with that of a Verna.
