Meghalaya Government Issues Heat Wave Guidelines for Schools Amid Rising Temperatures
Northeast Desk, 26th April: Amidst a severe heat wave affecting the state, the Meghalaya government has issued strict guidelines for schools to ensure the safety of students and staff. The directive, issued on Friday (April 26), instructs schools to refrain from organizing outdoor activities or sports during the heat wave.
Schools are mandated to provide adequate hydration facilities, including access to drinking water and shaded areas, across their premises. In cases of severe dehydration, immediate transportation to the nearest health facility is advised.
Temperature readings as of Friday (April 26) at 12:00 PM reached 28°C in Shillong, 33°C in Nongpoh, and a sweltering 35°C in Tura. Given these conditions, students are advised to stay hydrated by regularly consuming water and bringing their own water bottles to school.
Additionally, schools have been directed to provide ORS/lemon water in case students experience dehydration. To minimize students’ exposure to direct heat, schools are urged to limit outdoor activities between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
Furthermore, the order prohibits students from walking barefoot inside or near school premises, emphasizing the importance of protecting against hot surfaces during the heat wave.
