Meghalaya Government Proposes Construction of New Administrative City

Northeast Desk, 8th February: In a significant move aimed at streamlining administrative functions, the Meghalaya government has put forth a bold proposal for the construction of a new administrative city near Shillong, with a budget exceeding Rs 2,500 crore.

Led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the initiative seeks to consolidate administrative operations into a centralized hub, thereby facilitating improved service delivery to the public.

The proposed administrative city is slated to be erected in Mawdiangdiang, situated approximately 12 kilometers from Shillong’s city center.

The comprehensive plan encompasses not only the erection of administrative edifices but also entails the development of critical infrastructure elements such as road networks and water supply systems.

Chief Minister Sangma has meticulously scrutinized the designs for the administrative city and intends to table them before the state cabinet for official endorsement. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are slated for finalization by the conclusion of the second quarter of the 2024-2025 fiscal year, paving the way for the initiation of the tendering process for construction endeavors.

Looking beyond mere construction endeavors, the government envisions relocating a portion of the secretariat or several directorates to the new administrative city within the current term. Additionally, an allocation of Rs 100 crore has been earmarked for the construction of three access roads leading to the burgeoning metropolis, with commencement of work anticipated in the near future.

This strategic maneuver forms part of a broader developmental agenda aimed at enhancing living standards in Shillong, departing from fragmented approaches in favor of a cohesive, long-term vision. The envisaged administrative city stands as a pivotal stride in actualizing this vision, serving as a centralized hub for a myriad of government services, thereby fostering enhanced accessibility and efficiency for the populace.
