Meghalaya Government Proposes Land Allotment for Relocation Amid Gurdwara Dismantling Concerns
Shillong, September 28, 2024 – In response to rising concerns regarding the potential dismantling of the Gurdwara in Harijan Colony, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang announced that the Meghalaya government is planning to allocate adjacent land for the relocation of 342 families affected by the situation.
Speaking to reporters, Wahlang revealed that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is expected to meet with Union Defence Minister to discuss the land allocation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to finding a resolution. This development follows objections raised by the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), who have called for alternative solutions rather than the demolition of the Gurdwara.
“The state government will not proceed with the dismantling of the Gurdwara if the Centre allocates land adjacent to the Harijan Colony for the relocation of families,” Wahlang assured.
Earlier on September 25, members of the HPC and SGPC met with Wahlang to discuss the situation. Following the meeting, the Chief Secretary was directed to submit a report detailing the outcomes of their discussions to facilitate a well-informed decision on the final relocation blueprint.
Jagmohan Singh, an activist from the SGPC, described the meeting as “constructive” and expressed optimism that a satisfactory resolution to the matter is on the horizon.
As the situation unfolds, the Meghalaya government appears committed to addressing the concerns of the local community while working towards a feasible relocation plan that respects the sentiments of all parties involved.
