Meghalaya Government Pushes for Alternative Road to Revitalize ISBT Operations

Northeast Desk, 11th September: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has announced a renewed push for the Public Works Department (PWD) to expedite the construction of an alternative road aimed at improving access for large buses to the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Mawlai Mawiong. In a statement to reporters, Dhar emphasized the critical nature of the project, stating, “We are urging the PWD to accelerate the completion of this road. Once finished, it will enable big buses to return and resume operations at the ISBT.”

The ongoing closure of the Umiam bridge to large vehicles has significantly impacted both bus operators and local shop owners at the ISBT. Dhar noted that the alternative road, which extends along the Mawlai bypass towards the airport road, is expected to be completed within the next year. This development is anticipated to restore normalcy and support the resumption of regular business activities at the terminus.

Addressing concerns about the alleged misuse of the ISBT by anti-social elements, Dhar acknowledged the reports but clarified that no formal complaints have been lodged. He has instructed his officers to conduct a thorough inspection of the ISBT. “I have directed my officers to investigate the situation, and they will submit their findings in the coming days. We will take appropriate action based on their report to ensure the safety and proper use of the ISBT,” Dhar assured.
