Meghalaya Government Reopens Key Road Amid Ongoing Relocation Efforts in Harijan Colony

Shillong, Meghalaya – The Meghalaya government has announced the reopening of the Iew Mawlonghat to Bimola Junction road, which passes through the Harijan Colony, effective November 4.

This decision comes in the wake of ongoing unrest in the colony, which has prompted plans to relocate 342 families residing in the area.

In preparation for the resumption of vehicular traffic along this crucial route, the administration of the East Khasi Hills district has deployed additional security and traffic personnel to ensure safety and smooth movement. The reopening aims to alleviate disruptions caused by the unrest and improve accessibility in the region.

Last month, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar addressed the ongoing situation, stating that the state government aims to finalize the relocation of families by the end of 2024. He emphasized that the government is actively working towards a solution and expects to make significant progress by the end of November, considering the requests put forth by the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC).

Dhar indicated that if the recent proposal to utilize defense land for relocation proves successful, plans to allocate government land for the families would be abandoned. However, he reassured that government land would still be made available if necessary to expedite the relocation process.

The government’s decision to reopen the road and address the relocation issue reflects its commitment to maintaining order and ensuring the welfare of residents affected by the ongoing situation in Harijan Colony.
