Meghalaya Government Unveils Ambitious Plan to Transform Shillong
Northeast Desk, 19th May: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced on May 18 an ambitious plan to transform Shillong by utilizing nearly 25 acres of land to enhance the city’s aesthetics, celebrate its diverse culture, and alleviate traffic congestion.
During an inspection of key sites, including the PWD office, Phan Nonglait Park, Brightwell Bungalow at Barik Point, Anjali Point, and Polo, Sangma, accompanied by officials from the PWD, Urban Affairs, and Forest and Environment Departments, outlined the state’s vision for a revamped Shillong.
“We have identified 25 acres that will be used to beautify the city with new walkways, a green park, museums, and more,” said Sangma. This initiative is aimed at both enhancing the city’s appearance and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya.
A significant part of the plan involves the major transformation of Barik Point. According to a statement from the Meghalaya Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on the microblogging site X, the government intends to create a new complex featuring a National Flag and an iconic structure visible from various parts of the city.
“This initiative aims to enhance the city’s overall aesthetics and showcase the rich and diverse culture of Meghalaya. An iconic structure, including the installation of a National Flag visible from various parts of the city, will be a highlight of the new complex,” the CMO stated.
Sangma assured that the new developments will prioritize conservation, ensuring that the existing greenery and plantations are preserved. “Utmost care will be taken not to disturb the greenery while developing new infrastructure,” he emphasized.
In addition to beautification projects, the plan includes the construction of additional parking spaces at strategic locations, including multi-level car parking. There are also reports of a new road being constructed from the NEFA Secretariat to the military hospital to further ease traffic congestion.
The comprehensive project reflects the government’s commitment to creating a more beautiful, accessible, and culturally vibrant Shillong.
