Meghalaya govt becomes 9th state to withdraw general consent to CBI
Guwahati: The Meghalaya government on Friday revoked the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) ‘general consent’ to probe cases in the state.
The agency will be unable to investigate any matter in the state without the authorization of the state government, as a result of the withdrawal of consent. Furthermore, before initiating any inquiry, the CBI will need to obtain approval from the State government.
Meghalaya has now become the eighth state to revoke the CBI’s general authorisation. The BJP is a part of the ruling coalition, which is led by Conrad Sangma, the Chief Minister and leader of the National People’s Party (NPP).
Mizoram and seven other states had previously withdrawn their ‘general consent,’ including Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Kerala.
Except for Mizoram, all of the other states that have refused to participate in the CBI are run by opposition parties. Despite the fact that Mizoram is a close partner of the NDA, the CBI’s approval was not restored.
