Meghalaya HC Orders Crackdown on Thin Plastic, Seeks Environment-Friendly Alternatives
Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court has issued a stern directive to the state government, ordering a comprehensive ban on plastic products less than 120 microns thick.
This decision, aimed at addressing the growing environmental concerns in the region, was made in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an environmental activist.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh, while acknowledging the government’s initial efforts, stressed the urgent need for stricter regulations. The court emphasized the detrimental impact of thin plastic waste on the environment, citing its contribution to water pollution, clogged drainage systems, and unsightly litter.
To ensure compliance, the court has ordered the state government to:
- Implement a complete ban: Prohibit the manufacture, marketing, and use of plastic products below the 120-micron thickness limit.
- Enforce seizure: Empower authorities to seize non-compliant plastic materials from manufacturers, distributors, and users.
- Strengthen waste management: Establish and implement effective plastic waste management systems to minimize environmental damage.
- Conduct regular inspections: Carry out regular inspections to identify and recover banned plastic items.
The court has granted the government additional time to fully implement its previous order, but has made it clear that interim measures must be taken to curb the use of harmful plastics. It has also underscored the importance of exploring and promoting eco-friendly alternatives to plastic products.
The next hearing of the case is scheduled for March 11, 2025, where the government will be required to submit a detailed report on the steps taken to comply with the court’s directives.
