Meghalaya Health Minister Advocates for NEIGRIHMS Recognition as National Institute
Northeast Desk, 28th June: Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh announced that the state government will push for the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) to be recognized as an institute of national importance, similar to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
After a review meeting of the health department, Minister Lyngdoh revealed plans for a state delegation to discuss the matter with Union Health Minister JP Nadda in the coming week.
“The delegation will advocate for NEIGRIHMS to receive the same recognition as AIIMS, which would significantly enhance its capabilities and reputation,” Lyngdoh told reporters.
In addition to this primary agenda, the delegation will address the operationalisation of the cancer research centre at NEIGRIHMS and the allocation of postgraduate study seats for doctors from Meghalaya, considering the institute’s location within the state.
Lyngdoh also emphasized the need for the Central Government to ensure that essential services are provided by institutions like sub-centres, primary health centres (PHCs), and community health centres (CHCs).
Highlighting another critical issue, the health minister mentioned the exodus of medical professionals from Meghalaya. She stressed the importance of addressing the shortage of vacancies and the scarcity of medical professionals in the state’s health centres.
“The state health department will bring these pressing issues to the Union Health Ministry, seeking solutions to improve healthcare services in Meghalaya,” Lyngdoh stated.
