Meghalaya: Heavy Rainfall Causes Water Logging on Umiam Bridge, Delays Retrofitting Work

Northeast Desk, 20th July: Persistent delays in retrofitting and maintenance of the Umiam Bridge have led to severe water logging following heavy rainfall on July 19. The downpour caused significant disruption for vehicles navigating the route, many of which faced difficulties wading through the waterlogged area.

Officials from the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) attributed the issue to incessant rainfall, which led to severe blockages in the drainage pipes. “The heavy rain caused a major blockage in our drainage system, leading to water logging on the bridge,” MeECL officials told reporters.

Efforts to repair the drainage pipes are currently underway. Sanjay Goyal, CMD of MeECL, had previously stated that the retrofitting construction work on the Umiam dam was expected to be completed by the end of July, despite the imposition of load restrictions. “Work on one side of the dam has been completed, and concrete work on the other side is progressing. However, there is still some pending work underneath the dam,” Goyal informed.

The ongoing delays and recent water logging have highlighted the need for expedited and effective maintenance work to ensure the safety and functionality of the Umiam Bridge, particularly during the monsoon season.
