Meghalaya: Heavy Rains Trigger Waterlogging and Disrupt Traffic on NH-6 in Ri Bhoi

Shillong, Meghalaya: Overnight incessant rainfall has wreaked havoc on National Highway-6, leading to significant waterlogging in several stretches, notably the 9th Mile, 12th Mile, and the Jorabat area near the flyover. Ri Bhoi Police confirmed the disruptions earlier this morning, advising commuters of persistent traffic congestion and slow-moving vehicles.

Authorities are working round-the-clock to normalise conditions. The police department has confirmed active implementation of measures to restore traffic flow, alongside clearing numerous fallen trees that have blocked various sections of the national highway and other arterial roads. Multiple reports of tree falls have been received, with clearance operations in full swing to remove obstructions swiftly.

“All commuters are advised to drive extremely carefully. Do not overspeed,” a police statement urged, emphasising the need for maximum caution while navigating the affected zones. The public has also been requested to assist authorities by reporting any incidents of landslides or flooding, to facilitate coordinated response efforts.

In response to the developing situation, the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) has activated emergency protocols. Citizens can access immediate assistance through dedicated hotlines 112 and 1070. These emergency contact numbers will remain operational 24×7 throughout the monsoon season, ensuring rapid response during critical situations. Officials have underscored the importance of responsible use of these emergency lines to maintain their effectiveness for genuine emergencies. The Executive Director of the MSDMA has called for heightened public awareness, stressing that community vigilance and cooperation are essential components of effective disaster response during the ongoing monsoon period.
