Meghalaya High Court Extends Deadline for Inquiry into Amrit Cement Mining Allegations
Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court has provided more time for authorities to finalize their investigation into accusations of unlawful limestone extraction carried out by Amrit Cement Industries Limited in the Jaintia Hills.
This development arose during a hearing held yesterday before Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W. Diengdoh, where the state government requested an extension to conclude its ongoing inquiry into the matter.
The investigation was initiated following the admission of Public Interest Litigation (PIL No. 1 of 2025) filed by Ranjit Chandra Goswami, who alleges that Amrit Cement Industries Limited is engaged in “mining limestone in the Jaintia Hills region without a mining licence.” The court had previously instructed the state on February 19 to consider the petition as a preliminary complaint and launch a thorough investigation.
Granting the state’s request, the court has now set a new deadline for the submission of the inquiry report. According to the court order, “The report is to be filed by 2nd July, 2025, with copies circulated to all interested parties.” Furthermore, the order explicitly states, “in the course of inquiry, all the necessary parties shall be given a hearing by the inquiry officer,” ensuring due process in the investigation.
