Meghalaya High Court Issues Directive Against Cattle Buyers for Cruelty Violations
Shillong: The Meghalaya government has received a fresh directive from the Meghalaya High Court, instructing cattle buyers to adhere to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
The directive, issued by a high court bench headed by Chief Justice IP Mukerji, emphasizes the need for strict action against violators.
The court’s decision was prompted by a writ filed by a non-governmental organization (NGO) regarding the identification of Gaushalas at international borders. The directive aims to curb the rising cases of illegal cattle smuggling across the international border. Petitions have been filed to ensure the preservation of cattle and the creation of Gaushalas for their welfare.
The Meghalaya High Court has expressed satisfaction with the existing guidelines under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which regulate the transportation, slaughter, handling, and sale of cattle and other animals. The court has directed state authorities to maintain a strict check and take punitive action in case of violations.
