Meghalaya High Court Orders Govt to Safeguard Sacred Myntdu River

Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court has taken cognizance of the deteriorating condition of the revered Myntdu River in Jaintia Hills and has issued a stern directive to the state government to take immediate action to protect the sacred waterway.

The court’s order came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) highlighting the rampant construction activities along the riverbanks and the indiscriminate dumping of debris into the riverbed. The PIL contended that these actions have severely impacted the river’s flow, threatening the livelihoods of thousands who depend on its waters for agriculture, drinking, and religious practices.

The court has appointed an Amicus Curiae to assess the situation and submit a report by February 28, 2025. The state government has been ordered to respond to the report by March 13, 2025, outlining the steps taken to rectify the issue.

The Myntdu River, considered a sacred entity by the local populace, is a lifeline for the Pynthor Nein and Pynthor Wah valleys. The court expressed concern over the potential ecological and socio-economic consequences of the river’s degradation.

While acknowledging the government’s efforts to mitigate the damage, the court has emphasized the need for swift and decisive action, especially considering the onset of the dry season. The court has directed the government to implement stringent measures to prevent further pollution and erosion, including prohibiting the dumping of construction debris into the river and regulating construction activities along the riverbanks.
