Meghalaya High Court Seeks State Government’s Response on Police Recruitment Age Limit Irregularities

Northeast Desk, 18th May: On May 17, the Meghalaya High Court issued notices to the state government and relevant authorities concerning alleged irregularities in the upper age limit for recruitment in the Meghalaya Police. This directive comes in response to a writ petition filed by activist Barilang Pyngrope and his group.

Counsel for the petitioners, L Nghaka, presented the case before the court, leading to the notice being issued and accepted by government advocate ZE Nongkynrih. The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 23.

Previously, the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) had appealed to the state government to reconsider the age relaxation issue for police recruitment. In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, HITO President Donbok Dkhar requested clemency regarding the age limit, stating, “We are writing to request you to please reconsider the issue of age relaxation for the recruitment of police personnel in the state. The recruitment process and the online application for the various vacant posts in the police and fire department are ongoing, and we urge you to show clemency on the age limit.”

The court’s intervention highlights the ongoing concerns about the recruitment process and the need for a fair and transparent system to address age limit criteria for potential candidates.
