Meghalaya High Court Sets Deadline for Probe into Police Trainee’s Death

Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court has issued a directive to complete the investigation into the unnatural death of a police trainee from Assam by May 31, 2025. This order comes after a three-year-long investigation yielded no resolution, prompting the court to intervene.

The trainee, who was undergoing training at the North Eastern Police Academy in Umiam, Meghalaya, died on March 9, 2022, under controversial circumstances. Initial reports suggested that he had drowned; however, the bereaved family filed an FIR, demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.

A writ petition was filed by Birendra Pandit, which was disposed of by the HC bench headed by Chief Justice IP Mukerji. In their order, the bench stated that considering the special facts of the case, the investigation must be concluded positively by May 31, 2025, resulting in the filing of the charge-sheet before the learned trial court.
