Meghalaya: HNLC Cadre Arrested by State Police
Northeast Desk, 2nd March: Meghalaya Police apprehended Storgy Lyngdoh, a personal security officer (PSO) associated with the banned insurgent group, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), in an early morning operation in East Khasi Hills on Saturday.
Superintendent of Police Rituraj Ravi confirmed Lyngdoh’s arrest, disclosing that he was captured at his residence in Mawlynrei, Khliehshnong, after entering Meghalaya clandestinely from Bangladesh.
Lyngdoh’s arrest is significant considering his involvement in the HNLC’s peace negotiations with the government in the past.
However, recent developments have seen heightened activity from the HNLC, including the issuance of demand notes, particularly in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills regions.
The HNLC’s decision to withdraw from peace talks stems from their perception of the government’s failure to address their core demands, notably the plea for amnesty for both the leadership and members of the organization.
The arrest of Lyngdoh underscores ongoing tensions between the HNLC and the government, highlighting the challenges in achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
