Meghalaya Hosts First-Ever ISL Match as CM Conrad Sangma Joins Thousands of Fans
Shillong: Meghalaya etched its name in Indian football history as it hosted its first-ever Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Polo, Shillong, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and thousands of passionate fans in attendance.
The highly anticipated clash between NorthEast United FC and Mumbai City FC saw over 14,300 supporters brave the cold, reinforcing Shillong’s reputation as India’s football capital. However, despite the electrifying atmosphere, NorthEast United FC faced a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Mumbai City FC.
Undeterred by the outcome, CM Sangma hailed the event as a historic moment for Meghalaya. “Football runs deep in our hearts, and today, Shillong has proved why it is a powerhouse of Indian football. Having an ISL match in our city is a dream come true,” he stated.
The match saw Mumbai City FC dominate, handing the Highlanders their first loss after an eight-match unbeaten streak. The Islanders climbed to fourth place on the ISL table with 31 points following their victory.
NorthEast United FC began with early attacking intent, with Macarton Nickson and Alaaeddine Ajaraie combining from the left flank in a promising move. However, Mumbai City FC’s solid defense and clinical finishing secured them the win.
The ISL debut in Shillong marks a significant milestone in Meghalaya’s sporting journey and is expected to pave the way for more top-tier football events in the region.
