Meghalaya Hosts State Level Youth Exchange Programme 2024 to Empower Young Leaders
Shillong— The State Level Youth Exchange Programme 2024 kicked off at the Convocation Hall of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), bringing together 500 young talents from 12 districts of Meghalaya for an enriching week dedicated to cultural exchange, skill development, and talent showcases.
Running from November 4 to November 7, the event is themed “Today’s Youth—Tomorrow’s Leader” and is organized by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.
Chief Guest DD Shira, the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, highlighted the significance of the programme in building connections among the youth and enhancing cultural understanding. “This platform allows the youth to appreciate and share traditions from different tribes, strengthening unity within our state,” Shira remarked, underscoring the event’s role in fostering community ties.
Throughout the week, participants will engage in various competitive events, with outstanding performers earning the opportunity to represent Meghalaya at regional, national, and international levels. A notable highlight of the programme is the selection of 24 youths who will attend the International Empower Youth Programme in Jakarta, Indonesia, an opportunity made possible through their prior participation in district-level exchanges.
Among those selected, Trewasara Hadem from Jowai expressed her gratitude for the chance to participate in the Jakarta programme, crediting the 2023 District Youth Exchange with enhancing her confidence and advocacy skills. Similarly, Shanlang Kioo Laloo from Shillong reflected on his transformative journey through the state and national levels, acknowledging how these experiences shaped his leadership qualities and deepened his cultural insights.
The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Assistant Directors PB War Nongbri and K Passah, as well as community leaders like Fr. Michael Makri. The programme aims to conclude with a series of talent hunts, interactive sessions, and competitive events, all designed to empower Meghalaya’s next generation of leaders, ensuring they are equipped to navigate future challenges with confidence and resilience.
