Meghalaya Human Rights Commission Demands Probe into Alleged Killings During Anti-CAA Protest

Northeast Desk, 6th May: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has issued a directive to the Director General of Police (DGP) to furnish a detailed report within 15 days concerning the alleged killing of two laborers during a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Ichamati on March 27.

The commission’s action follows an online complaint filed by Shreshta, a resident of Madurai, who asserted that the victims, Insan Sing and Sujit Dutta, belonging to non-indigenous communities, were fatally assaulted by unidentified perpetrators amidst the ostensibly peaceful anti-CAA demonstration.

As per the complainant’s account, the protest escalated into violence, culminating in the tragic demise of the two laborers. Taking cognizance of these serious allegations, the commission has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, seeking a comprehensive report from the state police chief.

Authorities are expected to conduct an exhaustive inquiry into the matter, ensuring that all pertinent details are elucidated and submitted to the Human Rights Commission within the specified timeframe. This directive underscores the commission’s commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring justice for all individuals affected by such incidents.
