Meghalaya: Hynniewtrep Youth Council Challenges Government Plan for Harijan Colony Relocation

Guwahati, 30th April: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has raised objections to the state government’s proposal to relocate all 342 residents of the Harijan Colony, advocating instead for the relocation of only 194 individuals. This discrepancy arises from an RTI application filed by the HYC, revealing that 148 families in the colony are considered illegal settlers.

According to HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem, these 148 families are allegedly not affiliated with government employees, contrary to the government’s claims. Synrem highlighted that many of the purported government employees are part-time or daily-wage sweepers, some even appointed without proper advertisement. Additionally, he pointed out cases where individuals listed as employees were deceased, yet their families continued to reside in the colony.

The HYC stressed that such individuals should not receive preferential treatment beyond what other government employees statewide are entitled to. Synrem reiterated the importance of adhering to the law and cautioned against setting a precedent that could encourage further land occupation by non-entitled individuals.

Furthermore, the HYC called upon the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) to advertise vacancies transparently and prioritize local indigenous youths for future appointments. They demanded that government quarters be provided exclusively to the 194 families employed by the state, while the remaining 148 non-employee families should face eviction in accordance with relevant laws.

The HYC’s stance underscores their commitment to equitable treatment and adherence to legal procedures, advocating for the protection of indigenous rights and fair allocation of resources.
