Meghalaya: India Held to Goalless Draw by Resilient Bangladesh in AFC Asian Cup Qualifier

Shillong: A packed JN Stadium in Shillong witnessed a thrilling AFC Asian Cup Qualifier match between India and Bangladesh, which ended in a goalless draw. Despite being the favourites, India were unable to break down a resilient Bangladesh side, who were treating the result as a victory on foreign soil.

The match saw India’s head coach Manolo Márquez make five changes to the squad that defeated the Maldives in a friendly match. Sandesh Jhingan was handed the captain’s armband as India looked to dominate on home turf. However, Bangladesh wasted no time in unsettling the hosts, with Md Mojibor Jony’s shot finding the side netting within seconds of the start.

Bangladesh’s high pressing caused problems for India in the opening 15 minutes, with a defensive lapse nearly handing the visitors the lead. However, Subhasish Bose made a crucial goal-line clearance to keep India in the contest. As the match progressed, India found their rhythm, with Liston Colaco forcing Bangladesh goalkeeper Mitul Marma into action.

Despite India’s dominant possession in the second half, the breakthrough never came. Bangladesh’s defensive midfielder Hamza Choudhury played a key role in frustrating the home side, breaking up India’s attacks and providing stability in Bangladesh’s buildup play. The draw leaves India with work to do in the qualifiers, while Bangladesh take home a result they will consider a significant achievement.
