Meghalaya: India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise, Nomadic Elephant, Kicks Off in Umroi
Northeast Desk, 3rd July: The 16th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise, Nomadic Elephant, commenced today at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya. Scheduled from July 3 to July 16, 2024, the exercise aims to enhance joint military capabilities for counterinsurgency operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrains under the United Nations Mandate’s Chapter VII.
Representing India, 45 personnel from the Battalion of Sikkim Scouts and other arms and services have joined forces with the Mongolian contingent from the 150 Quick Reaction Force Battalion. This annual training event alternates between India and Mongolia, with the previous edition held in Mongolia in July 2023.
The opening ceremony was graced by His Excellency Mr. Dambajavyn Ganbold, Ambassador of Mongolia to India, and Major General Prasanna Joshi, General Officer Commanding 51 Sub Area of the Indian Army. The exercise focuses on tactical drills including response to terrorist actions, establishment of joint command posts, intelligence and surveillance operations, helipad security, special heliborne operations, cordon and search exercises, and deployment of drones and counter-drone systems.
Major General Gyanbyamba Sunrev, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Mongolia, and Lieutenant General Zubin A Minwalla, General Officer Commanding 33 Corps of the Indian Army, are set to attend the closing ceremony on July 16, 2024.
Exercise Nomadic Elephant aims to foster interoperability, exchange best practices in joint operations, and strengthen defense cooperation between India and Mongolia. It underscores the deepening bilateral relations and mutual commitment to enhancing regional security and stability.
