Meghalaya Introduces Mandatory Registration for Social Media News Sharing Under New Policy
Northeast Desk, 17th September: In a move aimed at promoting responsible online reporting, the Meghalaya government has introduced a new policy requiring individuals and organizations to register with the state before sharing news on social media platforms. The initiative is part of the Meghalaya Public Communication Policy 2024, which seeks to regulate the dissemination of information on digital platforms.
Under this new directive, anyone not accredited or empanelled with the Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) is required to submit their details to the department. Registration can be completed in person at the DIPR office or through email.
Failure to comply with the registration requirement before sharing news on social media will be considered a violation of the policy, with the possibility of legal action. Officials emphasized that the policy is designed to prevent the spread of content that could negatively impact state interests, public order, or morality.
The move is seen as an effort to curb misinformation and promote transparency in digital reporting across Meghalaya.
