Meghalaya Issues Health Advisory in Response to WHO’s Monkeypox Emergency Declaration
Northeast Desk, 29th August: In light of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of monkeypox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on August 14, the Government of Meghalaya has issued a health advisory to safeguard public health.
The advisory urges travellers who have been to countries with confirmed or suspected monkeypox cases within the past 21 days to immediately contact the 14410 or 108 helplines if they exhibit symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, or unexplained rash. This proactive measure aims to ensure swift medical intervention and guidance.
As of August 18, monkeypox cases have been reported in several African nations, including South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, as well as the United Arab Emirates. The most recent case in India was reported in Kerala in March 2024, involving a traveller with an international travel history.
The Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Department has intensified preparedness and response measures following the WHO’s declaration. Officials are advising the public to stay calm and informed through official communication channels to effectively manage the situation.
