Meghalaya: Khasi Students’ Union Urges Full Implementation of Original MRSSA Following Amendment to Migrant Workers Act

Northeast Desk, 4th July: In the wake of the recent amendment to the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has renewed its demand for the full implementation of the original Meghalaya Residents’ Safety and Security Act (MRSSA). Lambok Marngar, President of the KSU, emphasized that the state government is currently scrutinizing the observations made by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which raised concerns about the amended version of the MRSSA passed in 2016.

Marngar expressed approval of the Meghalaya government’s decision to amend the Migrant Workers Act, noting that the enhancement aims to improve the verification process of workers’ backgrounds. However, he stressed that the government must take a decisive stance on the original MRSSA and the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to ensure robust safety and security measures for residents.

The recent amendment to the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020, aims to bolster the verification process of migrant workers’ backgrounds. According to reports, the Meghalaya government and police will utilize the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) to verify workers’ documents and ensure they have no past criminal records.

The CCTNS, a project under the Indian government, seeks to create a comprehensive and integrated system for effective policing through e-Governance. This move is seen as a crucial step in enhancing the safety and security of residents by ensuring thorough background checks on migrant workers.
