Meghalaya: KJCLF Denies Religious Intolerance Claims, Calls for Unity in Mawkynrew Dispute
Shillong: The Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders Forum (KJCLF) in Meghalaya has rejected allegations of religious intolerance surrounding recent incidents in Mawkynrew village, asserting that the tensions in the area stem from local issues unrelated to faith.
Their response comes after the Khasi Students’ Protection (KSP) raised concerns about escalating religious tensions, particularly over a dispute involving a Ramakrishna Mission school construction project.
Satya Ranjan Borah, the president of KSP, had earlier labeled the incidents as “anti-constitutional” and urged state authorities to intervene. His remarks followed clashes between locals and police at the construction site of the school.
The KJCLF, however, countered these claims, emphasizing that the local Christian community has consistently supported the efforts of the Ramakrishna Mission to establish a school in the region and has shown patience throughout the process.
The forum clarified that the altercations were not instigated by any church or Christian institution but arose from specific local concerns voiced by the community.
It also criticized the KSP’s statements, labeling them as provocative and divisive, accusing the group of promoting religious fundamentalism that threatens the state’s harmony.
Referencing past militant behavior by the KSP, such as threats to block roads over disputes regarding the Mawjymbuin Cave, the KJCLF urged the authorities to take decisive action against such groups to prevent the spread of communal and religious extremism in Meghalaya.
The KJCLF reiterated its commitment to peace and cooperation, expressing hope for a swift resolution to the land dispute that has delayed the Ramakrishna Mission school project.
The school, intended to improve educational opportunities in the region, remains mired in controversy as the matter continues in court.
Meanwhile, local authorities have imposed a curfew in Mawkynrew to prevent further unrest and ensure public safety.
