Meghalaya Launches Key Projects to Boost Afforestation Efforts
Northeast Desk, 26th September: The Forest and Environment Department of Meghalaya has unveiled two major projects aimed at strengthening afforestation initiatives across the state. These projects were introduced during an inception workshop held at Sylvan House, Lower Lachumiere, on Wednesday, September 25.
Spearheaded by HC Chaudhary, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, the new initiatives focus on creating site-specific afforestation models and establishing a robust supply chain for high-quality seeds and plant propagules. The goal is to enhance the department’s capacity to efficiently and cost-effectively rehabilitate barren and degraded forest areas.
The first project, Development of Schedule of Rates for Afforestation Works in Meghalaya, will develop customised afforestation models tailored to the state’s diverse landscapes, including abandoned mines and other challenging sites. By standardising nursery and plantation operations, the project seeks to promote modern afforestation tools and equipment.
The second project, Establishment of a Supply Chain to Ensure Assured Supply of Seeds and Other Plant Propagules of Superior Genetic Makeup, targets 50 commercially important tree species. The plan includes establishing 500 hectares of in-situ and 60 hectares of ex-situ seed sources. A medium-term seed storage unit, to be set up in Upper Shillong, will preserve 10 to 15 tonnes of seeds for up to a decade, ensuring continuous availability. The department will also collaborate with the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) to store wild plant seeds for long-term preservation.
The workshop gathered senior officials from various state departments, forest officers from Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, as well as regional scientists, fostering discussions on project implementation and future collaborations. These initiatives are set to play a crucial role in Meghalaya’s efforts to restore its forests and improve environmental sustainability.
