Meghalaya Launches ‘MegARISE’ Initiative for Tura to Safeguard Vulnerable Catchment Areas

Northeast Desk, 17th February: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma unveiled the ‘MegARISE’ initiative for Tura on February 17, in collaboration with the KfW (German Development Bank), signaling a proactive move to protect vulnerable catchment areas, with a particular focus on the Ganol catchment in the West Garo Hills district.

The ‘MegARISE’ project, designed as a preventive investment, aims to enhance the resilience of communities reliant on natural resources along the catchment area against the adverse impacts of climate change. Through the adoption of sustainable practices and fostering community engagement, the initiative strives to preserve and restore the ecological balance of the region.

In a significant commitment to environmental conservation, Chief Minister Sangma also announced the distribution of cheques totaling ₹65.36 Lakhs under the pilot project of Payment for Ecosystem Services for the Ganol Catchment. This financial assistance seeks to incentivize conservation efforts among local communities and individuals, recognizing their pivotal role in safeguarding ecosystems.

Additionally, as part of broader conservation efforts across the Garo Hills region, the Chief Minister disbursed additional cheques amounting to ₹87.77 Lakhs under the ‘Green Meghalaya’ initiative. This multifaceted approach underscores the government’s dedication to sustainable development, prioritizing environmental preservation alongside community welfare.
