Meghalaya Lawyer and Activist Kynjaimon Amse Dies in Road Accident

Northeast Desk, 23rd August: Kynjaimon Amse, a 30-year-old lawyer and social activist from Meghalaya, tragically passed away in a road accident on the night of August 22 in Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills District.

Amse was a graduate of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) in Patiala, Punjab, and an alumnus of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) law department, where he was also a former member of the NEHU Students’ Union. He completed his schooling at Holy Cross Higher Secondary School in Umkiang and his higher secondary education at St. Edmund’s College in Shillong.

Renowned for his advocacy and commitment to social causes, Amse had recently raised concerns about a cement plant project in Wahiajer Village, threatening legal action if the project’s No Objection Certificate was not revoked. His legal career was marked by his dedication to improving infrastructure in remote villages along the Indo-Bangladesh border and challenging authorities over poor road conditions on National Highway 6.

In 2023, Amse was recognized for his potential and empanelled by the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority as a Legal Aid Counsel. His untimely death is a significant loss to public service and legal advocacy in Meghalaya.
