Northeast Desk, 31st January: The budget session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is set to commence on February 16, 2024, as confirmed by a notification issued by Governor Phagu Chauhan. The session will be held at the temporary assembly chamber in Rilbong, Shillong, starting at 10 AM, deviating from its usual March schedule due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
While details of the session’s calendar are pending finalization, the Business Advisory Committee of the Assembly is scheduled to meet to establish the schedule, with a suggested conclusion date of March 1, 2024.
This session holds particular significance following the February 27, 2023 elections, where all 60 members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly were elected. The National People’s Party (NPP) continues to hold power, with Conrad Sangma serving as Chief Minister since March 6, 2018.
Key economic projections indicate Meghalaya’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) for the fiscal year 2023-24 is expected to reach Rs 46,600 crore, reflecting an 11.5% growth over the previous year. As the budget session approaches, it is anticipated that the assembly will address a range of developmental and governance issues, reflecting the priorities and concerns of the newly elected government and its constituents.
