Meghalaya: Man Killed in Wild Elephant Attack in South West Garo Hills

Northeast, July 16, 2024: A tragic incident occurred in Jolgaongre village, where a 26-year-old man, Rikrak S. Sangma, was fatally attacked by a wild elephant. Sangma, the son of Meckenson Ch. Marak, lost his life while trying to drive away a herd of elephants that threatened local vegetation.

The attack happened between 7:00 and 7:30 PM as Sangma was tending to his forest land. A herd of wild elephants entered the area, prompting villagers to collectively try to protect their crops. Unfortunately, during this effort, one elephant attacked Sangma, resulting in his death.

Local authorities quickly responded to the incident, finding Sangma’s body on a bamboo stretcher in the village. Villagers had recovered the deceased from the attack site.

Officials are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and explore potential measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The community is mourning the loss and is likely to receive support from local authorities to address the human-wildlife conflict in the area.
